How to Keep Your Baby Comfortable

Room Temperature - Try to keep an even, comfortable temperature in your baby's room of about 70 degrees. On hot days provide ventilation but avoid drafts. On cold days, check on your baby occasionally to see that he or she is covered enough to be warm and comfortable. Windows may be opened provided your baby is not in a spot to catch a draft and the room temperature does not fall below 68 degrees.

Sleeping Position - The best sleeping position for a baby is the supine position. Your baby may also be placed on the side for sleeping. While awake and playing, your baby will be happier if placed on its back. You may give baby tummy time to strengthen neck muscles, but always supervise your baby.

Bassinet or Bed - The baby's mattress should be firm and flat and have a waterproof cover. No pillow should be used. Cover the mattress with a quilted pad and soft baby sheet. Blankets are not recommended; use sleep sacks.

Clothing - Your baby does not require any more clothing than an adult, so never over clothe or over cover your baby. Dress your baby according to the temperature. Some babies are allergic to certain materials, so watch for rashes in clothing contact areas. Wash clothing and bedding prior to use.

Outdoors - A good rule to follow is to take your baby out whenever the weather is pleasant. Babies born in the summer may be taken out on a nice day after they are two weeks old. Babies born during the other seasons should be kept indoors for three to four weeks unless the weather is particularly warm. Plenty of sunshine is most beneficial but exposing a baby to direct sunrays is not advisable.
