Safe Sleep Guidelines for Infants

June 2, 2026

Welcoming a new baby into your family is an exciting and rewarding experience. Along with the joy of caring for your infant comes the responsibility of creating a safe environment that supports healthy growth and development. One of the most important aspects of infant care is providing your baby with a safe place to sleep.

At Summit Pediatrics, we understand that parents and caregivers want to do everything possible to protect their newborns. As a trusted pediatric care provider, our team is committed to helping new parents understand current safe sleep recommendations and best practices for newborn care. Following these guidelines can significantly reduce the risk of sleep-related infant injuries and promote healthy development during the first year of life.

Why Safe Sleep Matters

Sleep-related infant deaths, including sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), accidental suffocation, and other sleep-related incidents, remain a concern for families across the United States. Fortunately, research has shown that following established safe sleep practices can greatly reduce these risks.

A pediatric doctor or nurse practitioner may explain during routine wellness visits that creating a safe sleep environment is one of the most effective ways parents can protect their infant during the early months of life.

Let’s review some strategies to keep your baby safe during sleep.

Always Place Babies on Their Backs to Sleep

One of the most important safe sleep recommendations is to place infants on their backs for every sleep, including naps and nighttime sleep.

Babies should be placed on a firm, flat sleep surface and positioned on their backs until they are one year old. Once a baby can consistently roll over on their own, parents do not need to reposition them during sleep. However, they should always begin each sleep period on their back.

This recommendation has been associated with a significant reduction in sleep-related infant deaths and remains a cornerstone of modern infant care.

Use a Firm, Flat Sleep Surface

Infants should sleep on a firm mattress covered with a fitted sheet in a safety-approved crib, bassinet, or portable play yard.

Soft surfaces can increase the risk of suffocation and should be avoided. Parents should not allow infants to sleep on:

  • Adult beds
  • Couches
  • Recliners
  • Soft mattresses
  • Bean bags
  • Pillows
  • Cushions

A safe sleep surface helps support proper breathing and reduces the risk of accidental injury.

Keep the Sleep Area Free of Loose Items

The safest sleep space for a baby contains only the infant and a fitted sheet.

Avoid placing the following items in the crib:

  • Blankets
  • Pillows
  • Stuffed animals
  • Bumper pads
  • Positioning devices
  • Sleep wedges

Although these items may appear comfortable, they can create serious safety hazards. If you would like to add another layer to keep your baby warm, consider using a wearable sleep sack approved for infant use.

Share a Room, Not a Bed

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends room-sharing without bed-sharing for at least the first six months of your baby’s life and ideally for the first year.

Room-sharing allows parents to keep their baby close for feeding, comforting, and monitoring while maintaining a separate sleep space. This arrangement has been shown to reduce the risk of sleep-related infant death.

Bed-sharing, even for short periods of time, can increase the risk of suffocation, entrapment, and accidental injury. Parents who feed their baby during the night should return the infant to their own sleep space once feeding is complete.

Avoid Overheating During Sleep

Overheating may increase the risk of sleep-related complications. To help keep infants comfortable:

  • Dress babies in lightweight sleep clothing.
  • Maintain a comfortable room temperature.
  • Avoid excessive blankets or layers.
  • Watch for signs of overheating, such as sweating or a hot chest.

Generally, infants need only one more layer of clothing than an adult would wear in the same environment.

Offer a Pacifier at Sleep Time

Research suggests that offering a pacifier during naps and bedtime may reduce the risk of SIDS.

If your baby refuses the pacifier, there is no need to force it. For breastfeeding infants, many pediatric care professionals recommend waiting until breastfeeding is well established before introducing a pacifier.

If the pacifier falls out during sleep, there is no need to replace it.

Prioritize Regular Wellness Visits

Routine pediatric care appointments play an important role in your child's overall health and safety. During these visits, your pediatric doctor or nurse practitioner can answer questions about sleep, feeding, growth, and development.

Regular checkups also provide opportunities to discuss child vaccination schedules, developmental milestones, and other aspects of newborn care that contribute to a healthy start in life.

Parents should never hesitate to ask questions about safe sleep practices, especially as their infant grows and developmental needs change.

Support Safe Sleep Through Healthy Habits

Safe sleep is just one part of a comprehensive approach to infant care. Parents can further support their baby's health by:

  • Attending regular wellness visits.
  • Following recommended child vaccination schedules.
  • Practicing safe feeding techniques.
  • Maintaining a smoke-free environment.
  • Encouraging supervised tummy time while the baby is awake.

These habits work together to support healthy development and reduce preventable risks during infancy.
